Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria have long factored into our investment process and decisions. Our Responsible Investment policy is based on the policies and recommendations of leading international organisations, including the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment, the International Finance Corporation’s (“IFC’s”) Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability, as well as VinaCapital Group’s comprehensive internal policies.
The fund’s executives have at their disposal a wide variety of resources to assist them in making responsible investments.
For example, they are supported by one of Vietnam’s largest research teams, who have the experience, training, and resources needed to discover and assess ESG risks and develop solutions to address them.
We have developed a proprietary ESG rating system, a tool that our investment team uses in evaluating new and monitoring existing investments.
We are acutely aware of the challenges of investing in a developing market like Vietnam, and the potential implications such challenges can have on the investments we make. A poor ESG rating does not necessarily disqualify a potential investment.
To us, it is more important that a company’s leadership understands that managing ESG risks is essential to long-term performance and sustainability and has a sincere commitment to improving ESG practices.
By investing in such companies, we aim to inspire and encourage management to create shareholder value by improving ESG practices.
